Do you have a curly hair routine?

As a Deva Curl trained stylist, I have my set ways for recommending curly hair clients to style their hair in the morning.

But….the number one thing I always say is never put anything through your hair after you get out of the shower.

Never put your hands through your hair!

Never put a brush through your hair!

Never put a comb through your hair!

Breaking up the curls makes is what makes curly hair frizzy.

Products are so important for Curly Hair:

I usually recommend a curl cream for scrunching into the hair. BUT.... no two heads of curly hair are the same! There are so many products out there for curly hair, how do you know which product is right for you? Also, what routine works best for them on day 2 and 3- if they can even do a day two or three

I started really thinking about this and not having curly hair myself, and not being able to try out the products myself I've turned to my clients to ask them about what products work best for them… Curly haired people really have it easy on day 1, but then can have it tough on day 2 and 3. Many CHP (Curly haired people) can't do day 2 or 3, they have to wash their hair every day to get a good curl.

What I've noticed is curly hair people have a product that they use for day one, and a different product that they use for day two, and sometimes even a third product that they use for day three.

How do I choose the right product?

This is a journey for each curly haired person. A long, long journey. You have to commit to trying different products, different amounts, and different combinations.

Most CHP will do well with a curl cream. I love Amilka and Matrix, but only you will know what works for you by buying products and trying them out. Some people will mix a curl cream and a shine serum, which makes any product less strong. Some people layer products, for example curl cream first, then shine serum. Diva curl has a light gel that works great for thin curly hair that gets weighed down by curl cream.

So if you are new to the journey of curly hair my advice to you is commit to finding out what products work right for you.

Routine:

Day 1: I recommend to brush the hair in the shower and never brush it again. Scrunch out excess water with hands and then with a towel, preferably a microfiber towel. Then scrunch products into the hair and set curls how you want them to look when it dries. Then never touch it again!

Day 2 & 3 options:

-Lots of water: Some people have to wet their hair completely (but not wash it) in the shower on day two, and use a lighter product than day 1.

- No water: To get a less frizzy day 2, some people sleep with their hair in a bun on top of their head and/or with a silk pillow, and some people even sleep with a bonnet.

-Some water: I have clients that will scrunch water into their hair from the sink before a day two and add a little bit more product. Some clients will spray water into their hair on day two and re-scrunch.
