Lived In Color

"Lived-in color" is the new term that encompasses many different coloring techniques to create beautiful, natural highlights that that are very soft and grow out wonderfully. It is a more natural, grown-out look, as opposed to a freshly dyed appearance. It's characterized by softer, blended tones that mimic the effect of hair that has been sun-kissed or naturally aged over time.

To achieve lived-in color, hairstylists typically use various coloring methods such as balayage, which involves hand-painting highlights onto the hair, or a combination of foiling and root smudging. These techniques create dimension and depth, resulting in a low-maintenance with touch ups that can go as long as 6 months to a year.

Maintaining lived-in color involves several steps:

  1. Toning every 3 months: While lived-in color is designed to be low-maintenance, occasional toning may be necessary to maintain the desired look. Consult with your hairstylist for toning recommendations based on your hair growth and color preferences. Most of my long hair clients will come for a cut every 3 months, and get a toner at the same time if needed.

  2. Use Color-Safe Products: Opt for shampoos, conditioners, and styling products specifically formulated for color-treated hair. These products help preserve the vibrancy of the color and prevent it from fading.

  3. Limit Washing: Washing hair too frequently can strip away color. Try to extend the time between washes by using dry shampoo or opting for gentle cleansing methods.

  4. Protect from Heat: Heat styling tools like flat irons and curling wands can accelerate color fading. Use heat protectant sprays before styling and try to minimize heat exposure.

  5. Avoid Chlorine and Saltwater: Chlorine from pools and saltwater from the ocean can both fade hair color. Rinse hair with fresh water before swimming and wear a swimming cap if possible.

  6. Deep Conditioning: Regular deep conditioning treatments can help keep hair healthy and vibrant. Look for products specifically designed to nourish color-treated hair.

  7. Protect from Sun: UV rays from the sun can also cause color fading. Wear hats or use UV-protective hair products when spending prolonged periods in the sun.

Lived in color takes longer than a typical highlight, so costs more, but you don’t have to come in a s often. By following these maintenance tips and working with a skilled hairstylist, you can keep your lived-in color looking fresh and beautiful for longer periods between salon visits.
